Microneedling recovery, day by day
Most of the downtime is the first three days, and most of the worry is whether what your skin is doing is normal. Enter your treatment date to see each stage with dates, and what you can — and can’t — do today.

Microneedling healing stages
Microneedling makes thousands of tiny, controlled punctures so the skin repairs itself with new collagen. The visible part of that — redness, then flaking — is over in about a week. The part you came for takes months.
| When | What your skin does | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | Red, warm, tight and a little swollen — like a sunburn. Peaks in the first 48 hours. | Hyaluronic serum and a mild moisturiser. Gentle cleanser, light hands. Sleep with your head raised. |
| Days 3–7 | Redness fading; dry, rough and flaking. | Keep moisturising, don't pick. Mineral makeup is fine. |
| Week 2 | Looks normal again, often a little brighter. | Ease your usual routine and workouts back in. Still no smoking or alcohol. |
| Weeks 3–4 | Collagen building; texture may start to look smoother. | Book the next session if you're doing a course. |
| About 3 months | The full effect of that session. | Daily sunscreen to protect the result. |
Microneedling aftercare: dos and don’ts
From BHSkin’s own aftercare instructions. If your provider told you something different, go with what they said.
Do
- Apply hyaluronic acid serum in the first few hours, then a plain, mild moisturiser.
- Wash with a gentle cleanser and pat dry with as little pressure as you can.
- Sleep on your back with your head raised for up to a week.
- Stay out of the sun, and wear sunscreen whenever you go outside.
- Use acetaminophen (Tylenol) if it's sore.
- Keep pillowcases, phones, masks and makeup brushes clean.
Avoid
- Makeup for the first two days.
- Workouts, sauna, hot yoga — anything that makes you sweat — for about a week.
- Retinol, tretinoin, vitamin C, acids or benzoyl peroxide for about a week.
- Swimming pools for a few days.
- Picking or scrubbing at flaking skin.
- Smoking or alcohol for two weeks.
Light, deep, PRP or RF: how recovery differs
- Light treatments for glow and texture can be pink for only a day or two.
- Deep treatments for acne scars and stretch marks sit at the long end — up to about five days of redness, pinpoint bleeding on the day, and sometimes bruising.
- With PRP, recovery is much the same as standard microneedling. The plasma is usually left on for a while afterwards, so follow the instructions on when to first wash.
- RF microneedling adds heat, so redness and swelling can last up to a week, and a faint grid of dots from the tip can take a few weeks to fade.
- On darker skin, treated areas can look darker rather than red. Temporary darkening usually fades within a few weeks; strict sun protection matters most here.

When to call your dermatologist
- Bleeding that's heavy, or still going after 24 hours.
- Blisters, or swelling that lasts longer than a week.
- Redness, warmth or swelling that gets worse instead of better, or any pus — signs of infection.
- Hives, a spreading itchy rash or other signs of an allergic reaction.
- Severe pain.
- Dark patches that are still there a few weeks later.
Common questions
- How long does redness last after microneedling?
- Usually two to three days, peaking in the first 48 hours. A light treatment can be gone in a day or two; a deep treatment for acne scars or RF microneedling can take closer to a week. Swelling that lasts longer than a week is worth a call to your provider.
- What are the stages of healing after microneedling?
- Days 1–3: red, warm, tight and a little swollen, like a sunburn. Days 3–7: dry, rough and flaking as the surface sheds. Around one week: skin looks normal again and your routine comes back. Weeks 2–4: collagen is building and texture may start to improve. Around three months: the full effect of that session.
- When can I wear makeup after microneedling?
- BHSkin's aftercare advice is to skip makeup for the first two days, then use mineral makeup, which is the least irritating on healing skin. Use clean brushes or sponges.
- When can I work out after microneedling?
- Avoid anything that makes you sweat — workouts, sauna, hot yoga — for about a week, until the redness and flaking have settled. Sweat and heat irritate freshly treated skin. Light walking is fine.
- When can I use retinol after microneedling?
- Hold off on retinol, tretinoin, vitamin C, glycolic and other acids, and benzoyl peroxide for about a week, or until the inflammation has gone — and check with your dermatologist before restarting. Bring them back one at a time.
- Is peeling normal after microneedling?
- Yes. Dryness and flaking usually start around day three and are done within a week. Let the flakes come away on their own and keep moisturising — picking at them can leave marks.
- When will I see results from microneedling?
- Some people notice smoother texture two to three weeks after a session. Collagen takes about three months to fully form, so that's when a session's effect peaks. Most people need four to six sessions, three to four weeks apart.
